Yep. Euro-mutt here, and lifelong Progressive. I've always understood the word "woke" to mean paying attention to what's going on, locally as well as systemically. It's rooted in Black culture, a matter of survival. Other marginalized folks picked up the word and use it with similar meaning. It's a good word, in those contexts.

Then the Right got hold of it and turned it into a slur, alongside Commie, Pinko, and a few others not fit to print. They turned the idea of paying attention, of not being asleep, into a meaningless insult. Like TFG said, he loves the uneducated.
