Yeesh, how did this ever make it into my feed?

I'm reminded of an incident in a "Little House on the Prairie" novel I read a while back. Some Natives had come to visit the settler narrators. Even though there was a language barrier, the children and the Natives had a good time showing each other various artifacts of their respective cultures... right up until the moment the children pulled out a crucifix! At that point, "the Indians vanished as quickly and quietly as they had come." As I read that passage, I felt myself in the Natives' moccasins and immediately understood why they should recoil from an image of a man being tortured. Even in comparison with their own rigorous ceremonies, the crucifix would be seen as beyond the pale!

I clicked on this article because I thought it would be about the most popular form of idolatry: greed for wealth. Nope. It was just another gospel pamphlet, like the thousands that terrorized me in my childhood.
