Yeah, I've heard all that before. Traditional societies consider anyone past the age of puberty an adult. People in their teens get married in some places. Yada yada yada.

In the past, life was simpler. Still is, in some places. In traditional societies, 14 year olds may indeed be able to take on adult roles. The immature functioning of the frontal lobes may not be such a great issue in traditional places where everyone knows where they belong and what they're supposed to do. In addition, infant mortality was very high -- still is, in some places. So adulthood at puberty makes sense, in those contexts.

However, in Westernized societies, life is a lot more complex, and we need all the frontal lobe competence we can get.

I know that offenses against prepubescent children carry higher legal penalties than offenses against teenagers. I can even agree that molesting a small child is worse than moltesting a teenager. However, both are wrong. There are degrees to many sorts of crime but that does not mean that the lesser degrees are acceptable. They are still crimes, and still wrong.

The problem is not whether to call it pedophelia or hebephilia or ephebophilia. The problem is how to prevent it and how to help those involved. So I suggest that you reevaluate your moral thinking.
