Where I come from, Euro-mutt USA-ian, spazz has always been a very derogatory word. I've been called that, because I'm autistic and my coordination is a bit off. I was mocked, last picked on teams, never learned to drive, etc. It sucks.

Back in the '60's, I had a classmate who had cerebral palsey and who used heavy leg braces. We were all recommended to read the book "Karen," a memoir of a child with cerebral palsy, so that we could understand what our classmate was going thru. (Link is below if anyone is interested.) We learned that spazz is derived from "spastic," a word describing the involuntary movements of people with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. We understood that spazz was a bad word and we should not call our classmate that.

That said, it took me about 2 minutes to realize that the word means something different where Lizzo comes from. Most people do not know the derivation of that word, and most people did not grow up alongside a classmate with cerebral palsy. So it required only a bit of a mental stretch to understand that words have different meanings in different places, accept her apology, and appreciate that she changed the lyrics. I've admired Lizzo for a while, and now I admire her even more.

All this noise makes me wonder what's wrong with my people that they continue to make such a big deal over what should have been a blip on the screen. And these are probably the same people who say that they don't see color so they're not racist, smh.
