When you criticize Black people for straightening their hair and lightening their skin, you're not speaking truth to power. Black people emulate white beauty standards for survival, not as a fashion statement. Black people are told that their hair is unprofessional, so they use harsh chemicals so they can get and keep a job. Darker-skinned Black people face more barriers in life than lighter-skinned ones, so they may use skin lighteners to overcome these barriers. It's not the same as white people plumping their libs and using darker foundation. We don't have to do those things as a matter of survival.
