When we first-worlders visit a country that has been colonized, we represent the ruling class / colonizers. Like it or not, that's just how we're seen. The mere fact that we have money to travel puts us on par with the top 1%, as seen by the people in that place.

So it's best to remember noblesse oblige. That's a traditional duty on those with wealth or power. It means to remember that with power comes responsibility. It means to remember that the $25 USD is something that we may spend on entertainment, and something that may keep a local taxi driver's family from starving. It means that if we get "scammed" (as some would say) in a country where people who look like us have colonized, be a good sport about it. People who look like us have robbed their country of its natural resources for centuries or more, and -- like it or not -- we're fair game.

Noblesse oblige. As first worlders, we're already in the 1% when we go abroad, even if we're of modest means in our home countries. From whom much is given, much is required. If you don't like it, stay at the resort and tour with a guided group, or stay home.
