Thanks. I hear this a lot from folks who look like me, race is not real, it's just a social construct so if we stop talking about racism then it will go away. They rehash that old Morgan Freeman quote (which he recanted) or drag up something Condoleezza Rice or Clarence Thomas said like that's the final word. I reply, yes it is a social construct but that does not make it any less real. Money, education, gender roles, work hierarchy roles, etc, are all social constructs. Yet if we try to pretend that these things are just social constructs and therefore not real, we are quickly reminded how they affect our lives. Same with race.

As an autistic person, I struggle with social constructs. I see how cruel and arbitrary they can be, and how tricky and dangerous they are if ignored. Explaining this to the normies, though, is like trying to explain water to a fish.
