Thanks.

It's a tough sell, trying to convince folks in group 1 that they're privileged. Try telling a poor white guy with an underwater mortgage and his job went overseas and he's living on gigs that he's privileged because he's not likely to be killed by the cop during a traffic stop. And most of the white people I know are in that group.

That's why I don't talk about privilege. I talk about rights denied. Rights like due process, freedom of speech and assembly, free and fair access to public accommodations, etc. Thanks to smart phones, white folks are seeing evidence of these rights denied, and are getting on board to make these rights available to all.

The Civil Rights movement of the mid 60's didn't talk about privilege. (Boomer here.) We spoke of rights, and got enough support from the general population that we got these rights enacted into law. Since then, these rights have been eroded by pushback and selective enforcement of the law. And now we're guilt-tripping potential allies by telling them that they're privileged because they can go to 7-11 without getting killed by the Neighborhood Watch. (Yeah, I know privilege in itself isn't something to be guilty about if we Use the Force for Good -- but too many white people tune out before we can explain that.) All this is just pushing them right into Agent Orange's foul embrace.

Malcolm X said, white folks need to educate ourselves and each other. That means talking about Rights denied to some and should be enjoyed by all. Telling about how racism is an invention of the Ruling Class to keep the rest of us squabbling over crumbs while they turn our toil and suffering into numbers in their books. Invoking about Liberty and Justice for ALL.
