Thank you.

White privilege is a term invented by Peggy McIntosh, a White sociologist, to describe the Black experience. Therefore, it's problematic.

Privilege implies something shady, something special you got that you don't deserve and can be taken away from you. No wonder it rankles!

As an educator, I'm often asked to explain what what it means. So I say, White privilege doesn't mean what it sounds like it means ... (Stop right there! Why use a term that doesn't mean what it sounds like it means?) ... it refers to benefits of civilization that we should all enjoy but are often denied to Black people...like being treated like a valid customer instead of a potential thief in places of business, or being treated like a decent citizen instead of a dangerous criminal in police encounters, or being treated with respect and compassion when seeking health care ... etc

What if we quit talking about privilege and instead talk about rights? It's not a privilege to be treated like a human being and a full member of society, it's a right! Some people are not getting that right respected, so we got work to do. This work is best done from a position of our shared humanity. None of us are free till all of us are free.
