She's got a point.
I work in the Learning Center at my local community college. I often encounter students who can barely read, and I have to read their textbooks aloud to them and explain what the text means. I do my best to be discreet and compassionate when doing this because I know the fault is not with the individual student but with our education system.
On the other hand, the most competent students I see are often from Asia, Latin America, or Africa. The education systems in these places are much better -- at least for those who can afford it.
