Pax isn't saying shut up full stop. They're saying shut up and listen. Can you talk and listen at the same time? If so, good for you! However, most people need to be quiet in order to hear what the other person is saying. If "shut up and listen" strikes you as rude / problematic, just mentally substitute "be quiet and listen."
