"Pause and speak tends to push the conversation into “dry” and “safe” topics. Pause and speak requires the partners to be less present and requires much less eye contact or reading of body language. "

This is not my experience at all. I've found that constant interruption limits conversations to shallow topics. Pausing to listen can lead to very interesting conversations, provided the listener is truly listening rather than thinking about what they want to say next.
