It wasn't their brothers, any more than Germany attacked its own people when they rampaged over the rest of Europe. Many enslaved people were captured from neighboring peoples during intertribal warfare. Others fell to travelling bands of human traffickers. The historical novel "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi describes this process in detail.
