I saw a beautiful video a while back, made in central Africa. Most people were slim due to active lives and periodic famines. However, a young woman engaged to be married soon experienced a ritual in preparation for marriage.
She was isolated with several older women for a month, while the elders fed her rich foods and taught her in their ways of womanhood. At the end of the month, about 30 lbs heavier, she emerged from isolation wearing beautiful cosmetics and clothing, her hair styled in intricate braids. She performed a symbolic re-birth with her "Godmother." Then she and the elders led the people in dance and celebration.
Although I'm not part of that culture, I could easily see the purpose of that beautiful ceremony. Along with the distilled wisdom of her people, she had gained enough weight to support a healthy pregnancy. Her people had given the young couple a priceless gift -- a fair chance at a healthy firstborn.
