I don't get it. I sing at open mic because it makes me happy. Usually the audience consists of other amateur musicians and their friends and families. While some performances merit only a polite applause, every now and then someone gets some whoops and whistles with the applause, or even a standing O. Never seen anyone get mad over it like AP here.

I've also been at social gatherings where some people would bring guitars and such, and everyone who was into music would go to another room or a corner of the yard and sing our hearts out. All unplugged so we could hear ourselves and each other. Great social bonding, that.

Maybe the objectionable part is about show-off singing where it's not expected, and to a captive audience?
