Fifty claps, and I'd give more if I could!
Here's the elephant in the room: militias were initially composed of white men only. One of their purposes was to enforce the enslavement of Black folks. Another of their purposes was to aid in the land theft and genocide against the Indigenous folks. This is why former President Reagan supported gun control laws when he saw the Black Panthers taking up arms to protect themselves. Initially, the 2A was not intended for anyone but white men.
It seems that many of the folks on the other side of the aisle still accept the Dred Scott decision, where the Court ruled that people of African descent "are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word 'citizens' in the Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States." They don't realize -- or don't care -- that the 13th and 14th Amendments repealed that infamous decision. I've heard that some want to repeal these amendments from that side of the aisle.
There's no use in debating these people. Instead, firmly insist that they stick to the point. This means that we have to be clear to ourselves as to what the point is.
