Feng Shui seems to rely on items that are significant in its culture of origin.

For example, four is considered an unlucky number because the word for "four" is similar to the word for "death" in Chinese. However, here in the West, four generally has good connotations. It can represent stability and honesty, the four directions, the four classic virtues (courage, moderation, wisdom and justice), the four stages of life (infancy, child adult, elder. etc.)

In Feng Shui, flutes are considered auspicious for directing energy and bringing health and prosperity. Here in the West, flutes are musical instruments, no more and no less.

There are many more such examples. Sure, it's good to arrange one's surroundings in ways that promote peace and happiness -- but Feng Shui is not the only way to do this and it may not work as well in the West as it does in the East.
