Disparaging remarks = racism? Oh please.

Racism is cops killing Black people over nothing.

Racism is Black generational poverty due to a history of slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, and all-round white supremacy.

Racism is crumbling schools with their back doors leading straight to jail.

Racism is expecting Black folks to do your bidding all the time.

Racism is "jokes" about jailing and maiming and killing Black people.

Racism is thinking everything's ok because everything's ok with you and yours.

Racism is baked into the system, and White folks are trained from infancy to not-see it.

Yes, all White folks. Trained from the start. I was trained. So were you. My brain is wired a little differently from most, so I remember the training. Most of us don't.

The system -- from the obscene wealth of the 1% on down to the rest of us scrounging over scraps -- depends on this training, our not-seeing racism as it is. But every now and then one of us catches sight of racism in all its ugly glory, and turns anti-racist. And even then we still make mistakes, big mistakes, because we're bucking a lifetime of conditioning. This article is a reminder to those of us striving to be "one of the good ones" to be careful and to be kind because things are getting really real, really quick.

If you're an anti-racist White person and been around a while, you know Marley K isn't talking to you when she says some of the rougher stuff in here. In fact, she said as much about halfway thru the article.

So if you're new to anti-racism, here's your first lesson. Listen. When someone's screaming in pain, you don't get to tell them to tone it down.
