A middle-aged man took the mic at a poetry reading I attended recently. He gave a poem about how when he was 17, he and his friends had a few illegal beers and decided it would be cool to overturn a car. So they decided who would run which way afterward, took their positions at the four points, and did it on the count of three.

It was lighter than he thought it would be.

They got away with it.

They were Black youths. My grandfather's voice in my mind started mumbling racist garbage and I answered him, young folks do foolish things. Didn't you? I know I did. Our brains aren't fully mature till mid to late 20s. And if it had been a bunch of white boys they probably have gotten a slap on the wrist. And wait, there's more ...

The poem concluded:

When I was 17, I helped overturn a car. If I'd got caught I would have gone to jail for a long time.

The former guy is a grown man who tried to overturn democracy. He got caught. And he probably won't go to jail at all.
